As you all know I like slow, basic an d small vehicles like my beloved FIAT 126p. I also like the Piaggio Ape...because I apparently like things even crappier than the 126p :P

Now....the 126p is a speed machine compared to the Ape. 126s can top around 110kph , while Apes can go....like....60kph....

I’ve noticed on my wallpaper searches for Apes that several of them seem to have diagonal red stripes painted on the front and/or back. I’m THIN KING it’s just an Italy thing that sortof maybe means ‘slow moving vehicle’ like our specialized ‘slow moving vehicle’ symbol here in North America:

I have seen that diagonal r e d band in Italian vans and commercial - u s e versions of saloon cars ( “ l i g h t c om m e r c i a l v e h i c l e s ” ) .

I am not 100% sure but I suspect it means it is not a vehicle for private use, but for commercial purposes (yeah, right) , which o b v i o u s l y has lower taxation (and, usually, s l o w e r m o t o r w a y s p e e ds a n d more stringent, frequent tech inspections: again, “yeah, right”).

T h e r e d b a n d i s c e r t a i n l y a n I t alian thing , I d o n ’ t recall seeing i t i n v a n s e t c f r o m other countries.

A SMV (Slow Moving Vehicle) sign in most (if not all) of Europe is an orange triangle with red outer lines.

No idea what the red band could mean.

Look at this sleeping beauty from Calabria which has just been sold for 3,500 euro. Quite probably it was bought by some Dutch Alfa crazies who are going to shoehorn a fire-breathing 2.0 Nord engine in it and r e s t o r e i t t o l o o k l i k e a Reparto Corse works barge.

(This is a furgone promiscuo. In this context promiscuo has nothing to do with the intense social life of its owner, but with the ability to carry both passengers and goods - a “combi”. Back in the 60s an Italian coachbuilder, Colli, built a small series of estate/combi versions of the Giulia saloon, which obviously were called Giulia Promiscua.)

Armed with Google translate (and the need to procrastinate about fixing headlight wiring) I came up with this . It’s in Italian but from what I can understand it’s a marking for using company car for private transport or something.

Seems it’s a completely custom build! The stamping above the driver’s cabin even says ‘ApeStream’ as a play on ‘Airstream’ and the fact it is a Piaggio Ape. :P
